welcome welcome to this year’s programme. thank you to all who used the festival website last year to order tickets and enter the competition. i hope you will do so again and also use the site to find out more about the poets taking part in the festival. many poets have come to torbay to find inspiration and this year we are celebrating their faith in the beautiful environment by introducing their poetry. this covers the light-hearted, the funny and the serious, including poems set to music. as usual, our popular thursday evening party-style opening event is at the atmospheric torre abbey where the festival organiser will compère this wide-ranging poetic feast washed down with liquid refreshments. torre abbey has the distinction of not only being torquay’s oldest building, but also of being the best surviving medieval monastery in devon and cornwall. founded in 1196 by six canons of the premonstratensian order – or white canons if you wish to avoid becoming totally tongue tied – it grew and prospered until, by the fifteenth century, it had become the order’s richest abbey in the country. since the festival opened in 2001, torbay has seen a growth of small poetry groups, but all reading and writing poems from all ages. many of these poetry lovers love to attend our workshops, and events, especially those which have a community feel to them. galmpton primary school is welcoming two poets to run a workshop on thursday morning and hopefully will bring one or two of their own budding poets to read their work on the friday morning. do come and support them as these are the poets of the future. local school on the edge of torbay. it is opposite robert graves’ house where he lived during the war years. ‘the hill’ event on saturday morning explores a geographical area in many forms, while sunday introduces a blind poet who brings along his personal ‘voice’ hazel to read the poems he hasn’t remembered. he’s hoping to meet other visually-impaired people from the bay and introduce them to hazel. the hill has unique views of cheltenham, the severn valley, the malvern hills and into wales. it has rare plants, animals and geology and is also a site of special scientific interest. it has archaeology dating from the iron age. one of the favourite venues used by the festival is the little theatre. on monday, the festival is holding a reading by poets from various poetry groups across torbay who will read both their own poems and at least one from the era when poems were learnt off by heart. members of various ‘memory cafes’ will also be invited to participate. the little theatre was converted from st mark’s church and many of the original features are still visible.the coffee lounge is a great venue for poetry with good aucustics and, of course, all refreshments. so with poets being put ‘on the spot’ and the popular open mic lunchtime sessions giving everyone a chance to strut their stuff, there is much variety in this year’s programme. with twenty five events, poetry will fill the weekend. as well as listening to readings, learn more about writing poetry at workshops, listen to poets talking about their craft, meet the poets and, above all, ask questions of them. there is much variety in this year’s porogramme. the subject for the festival challenge will be announced at the thursday evening event at torre abbey and then will be displayed at the main festival hotel.. visitors to the festival enjoy the convivial atmosphere of the livermead cliff hotel, with its own stunning views of the sea and torbay. this is a long weekend which celebrates all things poetic in the heart of beautiful torbay: sea, palm trees, light … and inspiration!
